Ethereum's
Darkest Secret

A ruthless war is raging in Ethereum’s mempool also known as the Dark Forest where transactions are waiting for confirmation. Shady army of bots and powerful miners act as a major systemic risk for the world’s second most popular cryptocurrency, stealing away millions of value from unsuspected users.

To bring attention to this issue and help end this malicious practice, we need you to join us!

More than 1,132 billion EXTRACTED BY BOTS SINCE 2020
MEV is one of Ethereum's biggest issues, more than 1,132 billion extracted from the network since Jan 1, 2020 until today. Including $379 million by sandwich attacks and $623 million (lower bound) by arbitrage and liquidator bots as well as NFT MEV (roughly 75 million) and different kinds of frontrunners (roughly 50 million). Problem is not limited to Ethereum, it is inherent in all smart contract based blockchains.

Sandwicher Bots

Sandwiching directly causes users` financial damages through malicious practices. Sandwiching attacks take place in AMM (automated market maker) like Uniswap by exploiting slippage tolerance of the trade. For instance, when a regular user tries to purchase some amount of a particular token, Sandwich Bot places two transactions in the block - first buy before and then sell after the user's trade. When the user`s trade is being executed, Sandwicher bots buy transaction has already increased the price of the asset, so because of that the user gets less amount of desired token. After the user has completed the trade, the attacker sells these tokens at a higher price and reaps profits from the difference.

ABOUT THE FIRST COLLECTION
01.
In 2021 there were 856.23K successful sandwich attacks conducted by 1540 bots with more than 379.92 million USD total amount. Apex for bots activity was May and September/November, which correlates with price movement of Ethereum.
02.
There are two types of NFT in the Sandwicher bots collection: First type is Sandwicher bots with 342 NFTs, which consist of a graphic representation of dangerous bot, with additional information describing: bot`s Ethereum address, how many attacks bot conducted, Date bot started attacks , total amount in USD equivalent.
03.
Second is 2300 individual attack cases conducted by bots, sorted by the highest value. Each NFT contains an illustration of a sandwich headed bot, bot`s Ethereum address, date of the attack, total amount of sandwiched value and which platform attack took place on.
04.
We are launching a Sandwicher bots collection using a combination of whitelist and public sale approach. Details of participation will be announced on Twitter and Discord.

THE STORY BEHIND
THE DARK FOREST BOTS

01.

The mev issue

MEV (Maximum Extractable Value or previously Miners Extractable Value) on the higher level is a problem of data integrity. When miners and bot operators manipulate transaction ordering during the block formation (include, exclude, and change the order of transactions in a block). By extracting MEV miners can extract additional value apart from standard fees and block rewards of Ethereum network. Currently a large amount of MEV is extracted by bots, which can be classified in two categories: benign and malicious MEV. Total amount of extracted MEV since Jan 1, 2020 until today from Ethereum's is more than 1,132 billion. $379 million sandwich attack and $623 million (lower bound) arbitrage and liquidator bots. Additionally NFT MEV (roughly 75 million) and different kinds of liquidity sniping, etc (roughly 50 million). Problem of MEV is inherent to all smart contract based blockchains.
02.

types of mev

There are two types of MEV: benign and malicious MEV. Benign MEV - when the main criteria for its extraction is to be first to capture it, without prior knowledge about pending transactions in Mempool. MEV extraction opportunity is created from change in the state of the market. MEV extracted by Arbitrators, liquidators and miners can be classified as benign MEV. Malicious MEV - is created from malicious exploitation of information about mempool`s pending transactions in order to gain profit, on the expense of unsuspected crypto traders and investors. MEV extracted by Sandwicher and generalized Frontrunner bots can be classified as malicious MEV.
03.

where does the money go?

MEV on Ethereum has exploded with the rapid development of Defi - fueled on the one hand by the profit motive of bot operators, who fight with users and among each other in order to capture profitable MEV opportunities, and on the other hand by the profit motive of miners, who are validating and including in a block only those transactions, which are offering highest fees. We deeply believe that lack of awareness of the crypto community about these complicated and sophisticated strategies of MEV extraction is a big problem, which has to be solved. Although the exact number of malicious MEV is hard to determine, we can say that it is quite a big number, considering that the total USD amount only for sandwich attacks in 2021 is more than $379 million, which is the sum of 856.23K attack cases.
04.

Negative externalities

Activity of bots and their gas wars flood Ethereum's network with transactions, slow down the performance and increase fees for ordinary users, which in the end creates unfavorable conditions for network usage. Worst possible form of Mev extraction - time bandit attacks is a direct threat to Ethereum consensus stability. In a pursuit to capture profitable Mev opportunities, miner with sufficient mining power can initiate a time bandit attack, reorganize a few blocks and extract profits from Mev, thus destabilizing consensus and creating existential risks for ethereum network.
05.

Drop Goals

The goal of the collection is to bring more transparency to Ethereum Dark Forest, which is a notoriously dangerous place with multiple actors, wild incentives, power dynamics and sophisticated strategies. We believe that greater awareness and knowledge of the problem will be beneficial for the protection of the crypto community and will serve as a catalyst for creating solutions to democratize MEV space and make it more sustainable.
06.

Each NFT has a story

Each NFT in the collection represents a real-life event of the MEV extraction, conducted by five different races of bots and miners, that happened in 2021. There is a huge amount of data about Mev extraction, thus we decide to divide the Darkforestbots collection into five independent collections: Sandwicher bots, front-running bots, arbitrage bots, liquidation bots and miners. First we will launch a collection that will represent 396 Sandwicher bots and 7400 attack cases, in total of 7796 uniquely genreated NFTs. The first collection will soon be followed by 4 more, highlighting different forms of MEV extraction.
Utilities for NFT holders

Utility #1 To Protect Yourself From sandwicher Bots Attacks

Holders of NFT will have the possibility to get a 50 % discount on MEV protection fee during the trading on MistX MEV protected DEX.

Utility #2 Dark Forest league

The Second utility is unique by its nature. Dark forest league brings even more transparency into the Mev space and adds a very interesting gamification mechanism such as monthly competitions based on monitoring bots in real time. More specifically we will monitor Sandwicher bot's real time activity (and consequently other types of bots from Darkforestbots collection) and create monthly competitions (12 competitions a year). Participants of the competition will have the ability to randomly mint competition NFTs representing the most active bots in the current month.
Technical characteristics of first collection
Collection will consist of 2642 NFTs and will represent Sandwicher bots and sandwich attack cases with the value more than 10000 USD.
There are 342 Sandwicher bot NFTs and 2300 attack case NFTs.
Real date representing information about the attacker and attack case situated vertically on the right side of the NFT`s visual.
Rarity traits of bots are based on the total value of bot`s conducted attacks
Rarity traits of Sandwich heads are based on the value of the particular sandwich attack case.
